Privacy Policy

How StepsToKmConverter handles — and mostly avoids collecting — your data.

StepsToKmConverter is a free tool that converts step counts into distance. It was built to be privacy-friendly by design: the calculator runs entirely in your browser, we do not require an account, and we do not sell your data — ever. This policy explains, in plain language, the little data that is involved and the control you have over it.

  • The converter runs on your device. Your step counts are not sent to us.
  • No accounts, no sign-up, no passwords. Nothing to log in to.
  • We never sell or rent your personal data.
  • Analytics only run after you say yes. No consent, no tracking cookies.

Overview & scope

In short This policy covers our website and the step-to-distance tool. It does not cover other sites we link to.

This Privacy Policy applies to the website at stepstokmconverter.com and the calculators and pages it hosts (together, the “Service”). It describes what information is involved when you use the Service and how it is handled.

It does not apply to third-party websites that we link to. When you follow a link to another site, that site’s own privacy policy governs your visit.

Written for a global audience

We serve visitors worldwide. This policy is written to reflect widely recognised privacy principles, including the EU/EEA and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA). Your regional rights are summarised in the Your privacy rights section.

Who we are

In short We operate this site as the data controller. You can reach us any time.

The operator of StepsToKmConverter is the “data controller” responsible for the limited personal data described here. For any privacy question or request, contact us at info@stepstokmconverter.com or through our contact page.

Information we collect

In short Almost nothing. A message only if you contact us, anonymous analytics only if you consent, and settings that stay on your device.

We have intentionally minimised the data involved in the Service. There are three categories:

1. Information you choose to give us

If you fill in our contact form, we receive what you type — typically your name, email address, and message. We use it solely to read and reply to you. We do not use it for marketing and do not add you to any list.

2. Information kept only on your device

The converter saves your preferences and recent results in your browser’s local storage. This data stays on your device, is never transmitted to our servers, and you can erase it at any time by clearing your browser data. The items we store are:

Data stored locally in your browser
Stored itemPurpose
Unit preferenceRemembers whether you prefer kilometres or miles.
Last sessionRestores your most recent conversion so you can pick up where you left off.
Conversion historyShows a list of your recent calculations on your device.
Theme choiceRemembers whether you selected light or dark mode.
Cookie choiceRemembers whether you accepted or declined analytics, so we don’t ask again.
App install promptsRemembers whether you installed or dismissed the “Add to Home Screen” prompt.

3. Information collected automatically

With your consent, we use privacy-conscious analytics to understand how the tool is used in aggregate (see Analytics). Separately, like virtually all websites, our hosting provider automatically records standard server logs — such as IP address, browser type, and the pages requested — for security and to keep the site running. These logs are not used to identify you personally.

What we do NOT collect

We do not collect account credentials (there are none), payment details, precise location, health records, or biometric data. Your step counts and distances are calculated on your device and are not sent to us.

How we use information

In short To reply to you, to keep the site secure, and — with consent — to improve the tool.

We use the limited information above only to:

  • Respond to questions, feedback, or bug reports you send us;
  • Operate, secure, and maintain the website (for example, preventing abuse and diagnosing errors);
  • Understand, in aggregate and with your consent, which features are useful so we can improve them;
  • Remember your preferences on your device for a smoother experience.

We do not use your information for automated decision-making that has legal or similarly significant effects, and we do not build advertising profiles about you.

Legal bases (GDPR)

In short Consent for analytics, our legitimate interest in a working site, and your request when you contact us.

If you are in the EU/EEA or the UK, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR:

Consent
For non-essential analytics cookies. We only load analytics after you accept, and you can withdraw consent at any time.
Legitimate interests
For keeping the Service secure, available, and free of abuse (via standard server logs). We balance this against your rights and keep the data minimal.
Taking steps at your request
When you contact us, we process your message to respond to your enquiry.

Analytics

In short Optional, consent-gated Google Analytics. Nothing loads until you accept and interact. If analytics is switched off, no analytics data is collected at all.

To understand how the tool is used, we may use Google Analytics 4. Our implementation is deliberately conservative:

  • Analytics scripts and cookies are not loaded until you actively accept them in our cookie banner;
  • Even after consent, loading is deferred until you interact with the page, so a quick visit leaves no analytics footprint;
  • We only record aggregate usage events — for example that a conversion happened, a result was shared, or the app was installed — together with non-identifying details like the step count entered or the platform used;
  • We do not send your name, email, or any direct identifier to analytics.

If the site operator has not enabled analytics, the cookie banner does not appear and no analytics cookies are set and no analytics data is collected. You can review and change your choice any time via the “Cookie Preferences” link in the footer. See our Cookie Policy for details.

Third-party services

In short A short, named list of the providers that help run the site. Each processes only what it needs.

We keep third-party services to a minimum. Those we do rely on are:

Service providers and what they process
ProviderRoleData involved
Hosting providerServes the website and keeps it onlineStandard server logs (e.g. IP address, browser, pages requested)
Google Analytics (Google)Aggregate, consent-based usage statisticsAnonymous usage events; set only after you consent
Contact-form serviceDelivers messages you send usThe name, email, and message you submit

These providers act as our processors and are permitted to use the data only to provide their service to us. We are not responsible for the independent privacy practices of any third-party website you reach by following a link from ours.

No external fonts or ad networks

The site uses your device’s built-in system fonts and loads no external web-font files, advertising networks, or social-media tracking pixels.

International data transfers

In short Some providers are global. Where data crosses borders, it is protected by recognised safeguards.

Some of our providers (such as Google) operate globally, so the limited data described above may be processed in countries outside your own, including the United States. Where personal data is transferred internationally, we rely on the providers’ recognised transfer safeguards — such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and applicable data-transfer frameworks — to protect it.

How long we keep data

In short Device data lasts until you clear it. Messages are kept only as long as needed to help you.

On-device data
Preferences and history remain in your browser until you clear them or your browser removes them. We never receive this data, so we cannot retain it.
Contact messages
Kept only as long as needed to handle your enquiry and any reasonable follow-up, then deleted.
Analytics data
Retained according to the analytics provider’s configured retention period, in aggregate form.
Server logs
Kept by our host for a short period for security and troubleshooting, then rotated out.

Your privacy rights

In short Access, correct, delete, object, and more. For device data you are in direct control — just clear your browser.

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights over your personal data:

  • Access — ask what personal data we hold about you;
  • Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data;
  • Erasure — ask us to delete your data (“right to be forgotten”);
  • Restriction & objection — ask us to limit or stop certain processing;
  • Portability — receive your data in a portable format;
  • Withdraw consent — turn off analytics at any time via “Cookie Preferences”.

You control your device data directly

Because your preferences and history are stored only in your browser, you can exercise access and erasure yourself at any moment: clear your site data / browsing history, or use the tool’s own “Clear history” control. No request to us is needed.

To exercise any right that involves us, email info@stepstokmconverter.com or use our contact page. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. We will never charge you or discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

EU/EEA and UK residents also have the right to lodge a complaint with their local data-protection authority. California residents have the right not to be discriminated against for exercising CCPA/CPRA rights; note that we do not sell or “share” personal information as those terms are defined by California law.

Children’s privacy

In short The tool is general-audience and not directed at young children; we do not knowingly collect their data.

The Service is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

Security

In short HTTPS everywhere and data minimisation are our first line of defence.

We serve the entire site over encrypted HTTPS and apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the limited data we handle. The strongest protection, though, is structural: because the tool runs on your device and we collect so little, there is very little sensitive data to protect. No method of transmission or storage is ever 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

In short We’ll update the date at the top when this changes; significant changes will be highlighted.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, to reflect new features or legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page, and we will highlight material changes where appropriate. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.

Contact us

In short Questions about privacy? We’re happy to help.

If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how your data is handled, please email us at info@stepstokmconverter.com or reach out through our contact page.
