How to Convert Steps to Miles

The Steps to Miles Formula

Miles = Steps × Step Length (m) ÷ 1,609.344

To convert steps to miles, multiply your step count by your step length in metres, then divide by 1,609.344 (the number of metres in one mile). For most adults it takes about 2,000–2,400 steps to walk one mile — roughly 2,112 steps for an average man (0.762 m step) and about 2,402 steps for an average woman (0.670 m step). That makes the popular 10,000-step goal roughly 4.73 miles. Enter your own step count in the calculator above — it is set to miles by default — for an instant, personalized distance in miles.

How Many Miles Is 10,000 Steps? Steps to Miles Chart

The chart below shows how far common step counts are in miles for walking, jogging, running and hiking. Because a running stride is much longer than a walking stride, the same number of steps covers more miles when you run. Values use average adult stride lengths; enter your height above for a figure matched to you.

Steps per Mile by Height

Your height sets your stride, and your stride sets how many steps fit in a mile. Taller people clear a mile in fewer steps; shorter people take more. The table shows steps per mile and the distance of a 10,000-step day for men and women across heights.

Steps per Mile by Activity

Walking, jogging, running and hiking each use a different stride, so the number of steps in a mile changes with your activity. The table compares them for an average adult.

Stride length, steps per mile and miles per 10,000 steps by activity
ActivityStride factorStep length (m)Steps per mileMiles per 10k steps
Walking0.4150.7622,1124.73

Running0.6501.1931,3487.42
Hiking0.4000.7342,1914.56

On uneven trails you take shorter steps, so hiking needs more steps per mile than road walking — see hiking steps to miles. On a machine, treadmill steps to miles matches your tracked steps to the console distance.

How Many Miles Should You Walk a Day?

Framing your daily target in miles makes it concrete. The table converts common step goals to walking miles and the time they take at a steady 3 mph pace.

Calories Burned per Mile

Distance is only half the story: heavier bodies and faster activities burn more energy over the same mile. The table shows the calories burned covering one mile by body weight and activity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply your steps by your step length in metres, divide by 1,000, then divide by 1.609 to get miles. Or just enter your steps above to see your distance in miles instantly.

About 2,000 to 2,400 walking steps for most adults, depending on your height and stride — roughly 2,112 steps for an average man and 2,402 for an average woman. Running covers a mile in far fewer steps, around 1,350.

Around 4.7 miles for an average adult walking (about 4.16 miles for a shorter stride and 4.73 for a longer one). Enter your height and stride above to see your exact distance in miles.

About 2.4 miles for an average adult walking. Enter your own height above for a distance matched to your stride.

About 3.8 miles walking for an average adult. Jogging or running the same 8,000 steps covers more ground because each stride is longer.

Roughly 7.1 miles for 15,000 steps and about 9.5 miles for 20,000 steps, walking at an average stride. Use the calculator above for your exact figures.

A 5K is about 6,560 walking steps (≈4,190 running); a 10K about 13,120 walking steps; and a full marathon roughly 55,000 walking steps for an average adult. Taller runners need fewer.

A running stride is much longer than a walking stride — about 1.19 m versus 0.76 m for an average adult — so you clear a mile in roughly 1,350 running steps instead of about 2,100 walking steps.

The popular 10,000-step goal is about 4.7 miles a day. A good general target is 7,500–10,000 steps (roughly 3.5–4.7 miles); active adults often aim for 15,000 steps (about 7 miles).

Yes. Taller people have a longer stride and cover a mile in fewer steps, while shorter people need more. Enter your height above for an accurate figure.
