How to Convert SPM to MPH

Steps per minute (SPM) is your cadence; miles per hour (MPH) is your speed. To convert, multiply your cadence by your step length in metres to get metres per minute, multiply by 60 for metres per hour, divide by 1,000 for km/h, then divide by 1.609344 for mph. In short: MPH = SPM × step length (m) × 60 ÷ 1609.344. Enter your cadence in the calculator above (it defaults to miles) and it returns your speed instantly. For example, 120 walking SPM at a 0.73 m step is about 3.2 mph.

Why Step Length Matters for Speed

Two people at the same cadence can move at very different speeds if their steps differ in length. That is why this converter uses your height to estimate step length — a taller person covers more ground per step, so the same 150 SPM translates to a higher mph. Enter your height in the Personalize drawer for an accurate speed, or switch the activity to running to use a longer stride.

Typical Cadence and Speed

Casual walking is around 100–120 SPM, brisk walking 120–140 SPM, and running commonly 160–180 SPM. Because running also lengthens your stride, a running cadence of 170 SPM at a 1.14 m stride works out to roughly 7.2 mph — far faster than the same cadence would suggest at a walking stride. Use the converter to see where your own numbers land.

Using Cadence to Pace Yourself

Many runners train by cadence because it is steadier than pace on hills and easy to hold with a metronome or watch. Converting SPM to mph lets you tie that cadence back to a familiar speed and to mile splits: once you know your mph, a mile takes 60 ÷ mph minutes. To turn a step count into distance instead, see steps to miles; for the metric version of this tool, use SPM to km/h.

Často kladené otázky

MPH = SPM × step length in metres × 60 ÷ 1,609.344. Enter your cadence in the calculator above and it converts to mph using a step length estimated from your height.

Most coaches suggest 170–180 steps per minute for running. At a typical running stride that is roughly 6–8 mph depending on your height and stride length.

About 3.2 mph for an average-height walker (≈0.73 m step). A longer stride at the same cadence means a higher speed.

Yes. Taller people have longer steps, so the same cadence produces a higher mph. Enter your height above for an accurate speed.
